My Father and I in SJC

Ricky Yung

My father is an old boy of St. Joseph's College. In 1967, my father was enrolled as a pupil of Primary 5. At that time, Primary 5 was the lowest grade in SJC. In 1990, more than twenty years later, I joined the Kindergarten of SJC.

About thirty years ago, there was no separate premise for the Primary school. It was simply a section of the SJC. There were only three Primary Five classes. The classrooms were on the lowest floor of the Old Block, where the Form One classes are now located. Brother James, who was then the principal of SJC, was also the headmaster of the primary school.

According to what my father have compared, there aren't much changes in SJC. Students are wearing the same type of school uniform and school badge. Students are active and sporty. The teachers are helpful and kind. English has been the medium of teacher for more than a century. The Green & White, the school magazine, is still a record of school life and a treasure of memories. The good tradition of SJC is well maintained and developed.

In the old days, there were only one or two lady teachers teaching English and French. The classrooms were not air-conditioned. The canteen is different. My father can still recall the delicious Portuguese dishes served in the "Ancient" canteen. Music and Computer Studies were not included in the curriculum. EPA at that time was called Civics. Now, there are more students organizations providing a range of extra-curricular for us.

SJC, with its teachers and students has been greatly improved. Surely, there are more changes to happen. One day, my next generation may have much more to write about SJC.
